Christian Kirk to Sign with Cardinals after being Released by Jaguars

A familiar name is back on the free-agent radar as a former Arizona Cardinals starter is expected to be released in a strategic cap-saving maneuver. Christian Kirk, the wide receiver who once made waves with the Cardinals, is reportedly on his way out of Jacksonville after just three seasons with the Jaguars, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Kirk, who was signed to a notable $72 million deal, might just be the spark the Cardinals need in their current wide receiver lineup. After his release, Johnny Venerable from PHNX Cardinals weighed in, suggesting Kirk could be a perfect fit next to emerging talents like Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson.

Drafted 47th overall by Arizona in the 2018 NFL Draft, Kirk enjoyed a solid start to his career, racking up 236 receptions for 2,902 yards and 17 touchdowns over his first four seasons. His breakout campaign came in 2022 when the Jaguars took a chance on him, resulting in an impressive season where he notched career highs with 84 receptions, 1,108 yards, and eight touchdowns. However, injuries have plagued him since, with Kirk missing five games in 2023 yet still managing 57 catches for 787 yards in the games he did play. This past season was a tough one, limiting him to just eight games, where he posted 27 receptions for 379 yards.

Given the challenges he faced on the field, coupled with the absence of a strong offseason in terms of games played, Kirk’s price tag may take a hit, making him a more appealing option for the Cardinals. His ability to produce on shorter routes could fill a gap currently evident in Arizona’s wide receiver room.

And let’s not forget, there’s a level of familiarity; Kirk and quarterback Kyler Murray played alongside each other for three of those pivotal seasons. While the Cardinals have already made significant investments in their receiving corps with Harrison Jr., adding a player like Kirk could be an intriguing move this offseason, should they choose to explore a potential reunion.
