New Brock Purdy Contract Will Have Historic Implications

The San Francisco 49ers are navigating a pivotal offseason, already making bold moves – including trading star wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Now, attention shifts to quarterback Brock Purdy and the looming contract extension that could reshape the team’s financial future (and perhaps the NFL’s).

FOX NFL insider Peter Schrager weighed in on Purdy’s potential new deal during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, offering insight into what the young quarterback might command.

“I think good money, I don’t know if he’s going to break the market,” Schrager said. “His agent Kyle Strongin was around during Indy, making the rounds. This is not like a machine where it’s CAA, or WME, or it’s Rosenhaus.

“This is an agent that Brock Purdy is his guy. He had him when he was coming out of Iowa State and Brock Purdy has been loyal to him. I think they are rational thinkers though in this thing.

“They’re going to get Purdy top starting quarterback money, but I don’t know if Purdy is going to blow out the market in a way where I’m talking like, that’s the new standard. It’s got to be this sweet spot.”

Purdy’s situation is unlike most in the league.

As the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, he defied expectations by leading the 49ers to back-to-back NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance – all while playing on a rookie contract worth just $3.7 million over four years.

Given his rapid rise, the case for a major extension is clear. If Purdy were to hit free agency, there would undoubtedly be an enormous market for his services.

However, the 49ers might be hesitant to set a new high-water mark for a quarterback who, while successful, has yet to win a Super Bowl.

NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic previously speculated that Purdy’s next deal could land in the range of $55–$60 million per season – a number that would place him among the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

“Yeah, I think that’s going to be the number that they wind up sitting at. I think the agent is going to try to get more but they’ll wind up settling in that area,” Russini said.

However, Russini also suggested that Purdy isn’t the type of player to push for an astronomical payday and risk hurting the team.

“Let’s make it clear though, I don’t think Brock Purdy’s sitting there going, ‘I’m demanding I want to be the highest-paid quarterback.’ I think for Brock Purdy if it was up to him he’d probably make a little bit more than he is now as long as he can drive his Toyota,” she said.

“I don’t think this is the type of player that’s in this to be the richest man in football, and I think he just wants to be paid what he’s worth and continue to try to improve it and get them a Super Bowl.”

Even if Purdy doesn’t reset the quarterback market, he’s still in line for a massive payday compared to his current bargain-bin contract.

Whether the final number lands closer to Schrager’s more conservative estimate or Russini’s projection of $55–$60 million per year, one thing is certain: Purdy is about to cash in.

Depending on the figures they agree to, there’s a strong case that Purdy’s upcoming deal will send shockwaves through the NFL.
