Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed that the Packers are trying to have the infamous “tush push” play banned.
While many NFL teams have attempted their own versions of the tush push, none have been as effective as the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to CBS Sports, Philadelphia converted a first down or touchdown on 81.3% of their tush push attempts during the 2024 season. When they ran the play on back-to-back downs, that number soared to an astounding 97.9%.
News of Green Bayâs proposal quickly made waves, particularly among Eagles players.
Star offensive lineman Lane Johnson, one of the key figures behind the playâs success, summed up his reaction with a single emoji on X.
The Packers arenât alone in opposing push plays, though.
Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has also voiced support for making it illegal for players to push or pull teammates forward.
If the rule change were to be enacted, it would require approval from at least 24 of the NFLâs 32 team owners.
The debate raises a broader question: If the NFL bans pushing a quarterback forward, will it also outlaw offensive linemen helping push a running back in a pile?
âPushing the pileâ has been a common sight in the league for years, and eliminating the tush push could set a precedent for banning similar plays.
For now, the Eagles continue to execute a perfectly legal strategy that no other team has managed to replicate with the same level of dominance.
Stripping them of that advantage would be, as some have argued, one of the softest rule changes in recent memory.
And judging by Johnsonâs reaction, all Eagles fans can do is sit back and laugh.
While we’re on the subject, do you think Philadelphia would have still went on their Super Bowl run if the tush push was illegal???
