As the San Francisco 49ers prepare for a pivotal offseason, Deebo Samuel’s future with the team appears to be coming to an end.
The dynamic wide receiver, who was once a 2021 All-Pro, has struggled to replicate his peak form and has reportedly engaged in open conversations with the organization about parting ways.
While speculation about Samuel’s next destination heats up, his teammate George Kittle has finally weighed in, making it clear that replacing Samuel won’t be easy.
Appearing on USA Today’s “Sports Seriously” podcast with Mackenzie Salmon, Kittle passionately defended his teammate’s impact.
“You can’t really replace Deebo. I think he’s one of the most unique players in the NFL because of what he can do,” Kittle said.
“He’s the greatest, best YAC (yards after catch) guy, besides myself – I’ll hype myself up, I’m pretty good at that, too. But he’s so good when he gets the ball in his hands.”
Kittle has seen firsthand how much of a game-changer a healthy Samuel can be. When the two share the field, their chemistry is undeniable, making the 49ers’ offense one of the most versatile in the league.
“The fact that you can line him up in the slot, out wide, in the backfield and do all the fun stuff with him and he breaks tackles, he runs like a running back and he has the burst, he has the speed, and he has the agility to get away from guys too,” Kittle added.
Despite the reality that a new face will soon most likely occupy Samuel’s locker, Kittle doesn’t believe the team will find a true replacement for what he brings to the table.
“He’s just such a unique player. I don’t think you can really replace him,” he said said.
You have to love the loyalty from Kittle. Having said that, let’s be honest, Deebo is nowhere near the player he used to be.
Kittle’s words certainly carry weight. However, he is describing the Deebo of old, not the Deebo of current, and certainly not the Deebo of the future.
With trade talks intensifying, multiple teams have emerged as potential landing spots for Samuel.
The New England Patriots appear to be a serious contender, given their league-leading cap space and the presence of former 49ers receiver Kendrick Bourne.
However, if a trade partner isn’t found, Samuel could face an even harsher reality – being outright released.
According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the 49ers could opt to cut him rather than accept a below-market trade offer.
That said, several wide receiver-needy teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders, may also enter the bidding war as the offseason unfolds.
While Samuel’s time in San Francisco seems to be nearing its conclusion, Kittle’s words serve as a reminder of just how valuable and irreplaceable he’s been for the 49ers.
What are your thoughts on Kittle’s comments? … Where do you stand on Deebo and what should the 49ers do with him???
