As Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes prepared for Sunday’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, his family was already in the news.
Fans were sending well wishes to the 29-year-old star’s grandfather, who had been placed in hospice care just before the AFC Championship Game two weeks prior.
Mahomes’ mother, Randi, had been sharing updates on social media about her father’s worsening condition, though she never disclosed specific details about his illness.
However, shortly after the Chiefs suffered a shocking 40-22 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s Super Bowl, Mahomes’ family made headlines once again – this time for the wrong reasons.
A viral video surfaced on social media showing Mahomes’ father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., in a heated altercation with former MLB pitcher John Rocker on Bourbon Street.
The confrontation reportedly occurred sometime during last week in the build-up to the game.
In the footage, Rocker can be seen approaching Mahomes Sr. and greeting him with, “What’s up, dude?”
He appears to extend his hand for a handshake, but Mahomes Sr. responds aggressively, seemingly shouting something back at Rocker.
The exchange quickly escalates into a shouting match filled with expletives before bystanders intervene to separate the two men.
As Mahomes Sr. is led away by a friend, Rocker tosses his drink at him, and the video cuts out.
The cause of the dispute remains unclear, and no punches were thrown during the incident.
Mahomes Sr., a former MLB pitcher himself, is currently serving a five-year probation sentence, including one year of “intense supervision,” following his guilty plea to a third DWI charge in August of last year.
He previously served 10 days in jail and had his driver’s license suspended for one year.
