If the Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for a boost at wide receiver – and they certainly are – they might have found an ideal candidate, at least in theory.
Jets star wideout Davante Adams recently expressed admiration for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, sparking intrigue among Pittsburgh fans.
Appearing on Up & Adams, Adams was asked if he would consider playing for Tomlin. His response should resonate with the Steelers faithful.
“100%, I love Mike. Anytime you have a coach that’s a players coach and you can tell that they’ve got a way with their guys… those types of coaches they always win me over. I’ve had nothing but respect for him and it’s been mutual,” Adams said.
While the idea of Adams wearing the Black and Gold may be more fantasy than reality, it’s clear the superstar receiver and Tomlin already share a solid rapport.
Adams shared a memorable moment from a 2023 game between the Steelers and Raiders, offering insight into his interactions with Tomlin.
“He talked to me during some games,” Adams recalled. “I remember last year, 2023, they came to our place in Vegas. I think Joey Porter Jr. had made a play on the sidelines on me, and he got up barking, and screaming and hollering in my face a little bit, and I just kind of looked at him.
“And then I looked over at Mike Tomlin and he comes running over to me and he’s like, ‘He’s young, he’s young. Just let him live.’ So, just having somebody that’s like, ‘Look my guy made a play and he was a little out of line,’ but just to be personable enough to joke with me in that moment about that, says a lot about him.
“Obviously a great coach, but he’s a hell of a dude too,” Adams concluded.
With the Steelers’ offense struggling and in need of playmakers, fans might wonder what it would take to bring Adams to Pittsburgh.
Perhaps just as interesting is the fact that Adams and his close friend Aaron Rodgers could possibly be a packaged deal.
Considering that the Steelers are most likely looking for an upgrade at quarterback, Rodgers figures to be a realistic option.
Much like Adams, Rodgers has made his respect for Tomlin very well known over the years.
What’s interesting is that Tomlin has become a polarizing figure in Pittsburgh. It seems that the fanbase is truly split down the middle on him.
While he’s a respected leader and a likely Hall of Famer, there is great concern that his voice has become a bit stale.
Sure, you can place the majority of the blame on Russell Wilson. However, some fans are still convinced that a certain ceiling exists with Tomlin teams, especially in the post-Big Ben era.
What are your thoughts on Tomlin and the overall direction of the franchise?
Should the Steelers consider bringing both Rodgers and Adams to Pittsburgh???
