It looks like the Cowboys are preparing to make some significant changes on the sidelines. Reports are coming in that Mike McCarthy will not be returning as head coach next season. His discussions with the team regarding a contract extension fell through, primarily due to disagreements over the contract length.
During his tenure with the Cowboys, McCarthy posted a respectable 49-35 record. Highlighted by three consecutive 12-win seasons from 2021 to 2023, his regular-season success didn’t translate to playoff victories, managing only one during that period. The 2024 season saw a dip to 7-10, largely due to a spate of injuries that beset the team.
Interestingly, not too long ago, the Cowboys had blocked McCarthy from exploring opportunities with the Bears, who are also in the hunt for a new head coach. With McCarthy now on the market, he has the opportunity to consider the Bears—or any NFL team ready to offer him the chance to lead once again. This opens the door for McCarthy’s third head coaching stint in the league, and it will be fascinating to see which direction he—and the Cowboys—will head next.
