Shocking news dropped yesterday when it was announced that multiple NFL teams, including Tom Brady’s Las Vegas Raiders, were trying to lure Bill Belichick back to the men’s league.
Despite just taking over as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, there are some who feel that deep-down Belichick would have no problem ditching his new job for the right NFL opportunity.
Brady, making sure to cover his bases and leave no stone unturned in Vegas, reportedly contacted Belichick to see “what it would take” to convince him to come to the Raiders.
However, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Belichick remains fully committed to his role at North Carolina.
“Bill Belichick has no plans to return to the NFL, per sources. I’m told his sole focus is on coaching and recruiting for North Carolina, as he continues building the Tar Heels’ future. He’s recruiting today in New Jersey,” Russini reported on X.
The Raiders recently fired head coach Antonio Pierce, sparking speculation about potential replacements.
Despite Brady’s outreach, a reunion between the iconic quarterback-coach duo seems unlikely.
Having said that, there is some interesting language and clauses in Belichick’s UNC contract which have raised plenty of eyebrows in the football world.
In fairness to Belichick, he certainly seems to be all-in on his new job. He’s been out recruiting with his son (and new defensive coordinator), Steve, and has talked-up the program every single chance he’s gotten.
In many ways, Belichick’s weekly spots with Pat McAfee have become a recruiting platform for Tar Heels football.
It was NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero who initially broke the story that Brady and others were interested in exploring the idea of hiring Belichick.
“Multiple NFL teams have inquired about whether legendary coach Bill Belichick would reconsider his move to college football – including the Raiders, whose new minority owner Tom Brady spoke recently with his old coach, per league sources,” Pelissero reported on X yesterday.
Belichick, widely regarded as the greatest NFL coach of all time, made his name leading the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles. He also chipped in two more during his time serving as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft fired Belichick at the conclusion of last season. (A decision he most likely regrets deeply.)
Interestingly, Belichick has struggled (until now) to attract much interest from other NFL teams.
He clearly got sick and tired of waiting and decided to head to the college ranks where he could reunite with his son (who is expected to ultimately succeed him as UNC’s head coach).
What are your thoughts on the bizarre situation?
Despite Russini’s report, could you see Belichick actually bailing on UNC and reuniting with Brady in Vegas???
Imagine that happens – Think about how Robert Kraft would feel…
