The Chicago Bears are actively searching for their next head coach, and general manager Ryan Poles has left the door open to unconventional strategies – including the possibility of trading for one.
“We’ll look at all avenues to get the best coach here,” Poles said.
Poles’ remarks come amid speculation surrounding trade interest in prominent NFL head coaches, such as Kevin O’Connell of the Minnesota Vikings and Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Reports suggest multiple teams have inquired about O’Connell, while Tomlin has also emerged as a potential target for interested franchises. (Although he has a no-trade clause, so he would have to approve of any move.)
Poles hinted that the Bears’ coaching search could take some surprising turns. “There’s going to be some names that you don’t expect, that will surprise you,” he said.
These comments have fueled speculation that O’Connell or Tomlin could be among the unexpected names under consideration.
O’Connell, in particular, has gained attention after leading the Vikings to a remarkable 14-3 regular season.
Minnesota’s success, spearheaded by former San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Sam Darnold, has exceeded expectations, with Minnesota now viewed as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
O’Connell’s contract situation has also sparked trade rumors, as he enters the final year of his deal in 2025 without an extension in place. However, the Vikings have quickly shut down the notion of a trade.
As for Tomlin, his 18-year tenure in Pittsburgh and reputation as one of the league’s most consistent and respected head coaches make him an attractive candidate.
Despite the Steelers’ distance from their 2008 Super Bowl win, Tomlin’s track record of success remains a significant draw. However, the idea of Pittsburgh parting ways with its longtime leader appears far-fetched.
If the Bears are intent on trading for a head coach, they may need to set their sights beyond Minnesota and Pittsburgh. Still, Poles’ willingness to explore every option reflects the team’s determination to find the right fit.
By all accounts, it feels like former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has a strong chance at landing the Bears job.
