The Philadelphia Eagles have been a dominant force so far this season, boasting a stellar 12-2 record as they head into Week 16.
With the NFC playoffs on the horizon, the Eagles are well-positioned for a deep postseason run, and one prominent figure in the football world believes they might be the team to beat.
Appearing on the Let’s Go! podcast, legendary coach Bill Belichick shared his thoughts on the Eagles, describing them as the standout contender to win the Super Bowl.
“Who would that be, who stands out to you right now as that team. Look at these scores we’re seeing,” host Jim Gray asked Belichick.
“Start with Philadelphia,” Belichick confidently replied.
Belichick’s endorsement comes after a revealing Week 15 in the NFL, where high-scoring games exposed defensive weaknesses across the league.
Reflecting on the Bills’ 48-42 win over the Lions, Belichick emphasized the importance of defense in postseason success.
“That was a game really for both teams,” Belichick said. “I’d say a little bit of a reality check of whichever team won, obviously Buffalo won, the issues of giving up 40 points are concerning.
“You can outscore other teams, but it’s hard to outscore all of the teams when you get into playoff football and to go all the way to a championship.
“I think that was a pretty good affirmation to me that whoever wins this year is going to have to be good on defense. Because these teams can score a lot of points but they also give up a lot of points.”
Belichick’s praise for the Eagles is well-founded.
Philadelphia’s defense delivered a standout performance in Week 15, holding the Pittsburgh Steelers to just 13 points and extending their winning streak to 10 games.
Despite their impressive record, the Eagles face stiff competition from the Detroit Lions, who also stand at 12-2 but hold the tiebreaker due to a superior conference win percentage.
Both teams have three NFC matchups remaining in the regular season, making the final weeks a critical stretch.
Philadelphia will face Washington, Dallas, and the New York Giants – divisional rivals that could pose unexpected challenges. Still, the Eagles are widely expected to finish strong, potentially going 3-0 to close the season.
Detroit’s path is slightly tougher, with games against Chicago, San Francisco, and Minnesota.
If both teams perform as anticipated, the Lions’ Week 18 clash with the Vikings could determine the NFC’s top seed.
The Eagles have already secured their playoff berth, but the No. 1 seed remains in reach. Should they overtake the Lions, Philadelphia would gain home-field advantage throughout the playoffs – an edge that could prove decisive.
As Belichick pointed out, Philadelphia’s defense could be what gives them an edge in potential future matchups against high-powered offenses.
Having said that, has quarterback Jalen Hurts shown you enough to be confident in picking the Eagles to actually win the Super Bowl?
