As the NFL season heats up, two frontrunners for the league’s highest individual honors will square off on Sunday: Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, the favorite to win Coach of the Year, and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the leading contender for Most Valuable Player.
Sunday’s showdown may very well be an early Super Bowl preview.
Campbell didn’t hold back his admiration for Allen, praising the star quarterback’s physical dominance and unyielding competitive spirit.
“He’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast, he’s explosive, and he’s competitive,” Campbell said. “He’s got all these attributes, physical attributes, but it’s what’s inside of him. He’s the ultimate competitor. That’s what separates him from a lot of guys.”
Campbell highlighted Allen’s fearless approach as a key reason for the Bills’ success.
“He’s fearless and it’s why those guys play the way they do for him, because he just won’t give it up, he’s not gonna give it up and he’s gonna do whatever it takes to get the next first down, or get the touchdown,” he said.
“When they need him in crunch time he’s gonna show up, and he just won’t give up. I think that’s what makes him who he is, his competitiveness.”
Some fans think that Campbell was speaking a little too glowingly about Allen, especially since his own quarterback, Jared Goff, can be defined by those same exact compliments.
Of course, Campbell didn’t mean any harm. No one loves Goff more than he does. Having said that, some think he got a little too carried away with his praise for Allen.
Either way, the stakes are high for both teams as they continue their playoff pushes.
Detroit, revitalized under Campbell’s leadership, is in the thick of the NFC playoff hunt and would love to lock up home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The same exact thing goes for Allen and the Bills.
Campbell is currently listed as a -175 favorite for Coach of the Year, while Allen sits at -400 to claim MVP honors.
