Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown his full support behind head coach Mike McCarthy, voicing his desire for him to stay on for a sixth season in 2025.
“I believe in him wholeheartedly,” Prescott said, per Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. “I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance.
“Another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. ‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it … But I wholeheartedly believe in him.”
McCarthy’s future with the Cowboys has been the subject of much speculation over the past two years, especially with his contract set to expire after this season.
Surprisingly, owner Jerry Jones appears to be open to McCarthy’s return and he made that point clear during a recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
“I don’t think that’s crazy at all,” Jones said of the idea that McCarthy remains in charge. “That’s not crazy. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He’s got great ideas.
“So, the bottom line is in no place in my body language or anything else have you seen any indications about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t.”
McCarthy’s tenure in Dallas has been heavily influenced by Prescott’s availability.
In 2020, McCarthy’s first season, the Cowboys struggled to a 6-10 record as Prescott missed the majority of the year with an ankle injury.
The team rebounded in the following seasons, posting three straight 12-5 campaigns and making the playoffs with Prescott at the helm.
Of course, each one of those seasons ended in disastrous fashion. When healthy, regular season success hasn’t been an issue for the Cowboys. But the playoffs have.
This year has been much more challenging.
Prescott is sidelined for the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury, and the Cowboys have stumbled to a 5-7 record. (Although they’ve won two straight and have shown signs of life.)
The Cowboys’ playoff hopes hinge on continuing that momentum, with upcoming matchups against the struggling Cincinnati Bengals (4-8) and Carolina Panthers (3-9).
These games are critical if McCarthy hopes to lead his team back into postseason contention without Prescott.
Regardless of how the rest of the season unfolds, Prescott made it clear he values McCarthy’s leadership and would like to see him continue in 2025 and beyond.
For now, though, the team’s focus remains on salvaging this season and proving McCarthy is the right man for the job.
What are your thoughts on Prescott’s comments?
Do you really think Jones and company will be bringing McCarthy back?
Of course, the way the rest of the season goes will help dictate what happens. But in a perfect world, what should the Cowboys big-picture plans be???
