The family of former NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins has filed a lawsuit against his widow, Kalabrya Haskins, citing a range of grievances that they claim have compounded the tragedy of his passing.
Haskins, a former standout Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback and first-round draft pick for the Washington Commanders, was killed on a Florida highway in April 2022.
He was just 24 years old.
According to the lawsuit, Haskins’ family alleges that Kalabrya Haskins has refused to share the ashes of the late quarterback with his family, depriving them of a connection to their loved one’s memory.
Additionally, they claim she has withheld critical financial records related to his estate. In the suit, the family further contends that they have “experienced constant harassment from the defendant whenever they have attempted to reference his name, image, and likeness in public forums such as social media.”
The family also claims that Dwayne Haskins Sr., his father, experienced interference on social media due to his resemblance to his son and their shared name.
“This ordeal has only added to the already overwhelming grief,” stated a family representative.
Dwayne Haskins’ career in the NFL spanned from 2019 to 2021. Selected as the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, he played two seasons with Washington, where he threw 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
He joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021, serving as a backup quarterback, and had recently re-signed with the team before his untimely death.
On the day of the incident, Haskins reportedly ran out of gas on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale and was struck by a dump truck while attempting to cross the highway.
An investigation revealed that Haskins had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.24, three times the legal limit, and that he tested positive for ketamine, oxymorphone, methamphetamine, and norketamine.
Kalabrya Haskins has yet to respond to the troubling allegations.
