The New Orleans Saints have officially parted ways with head coach Dennis Allen after their shocking 23-22 defeat against the Carolina Panthers.
While the writing has been on the wall in New Orleans, it’s shocking to see just how far the Saints have fallen since their red-hot start to the season.
After all, they were undoubtedly the most impressive team in the entire NFL after their 2-0 start. However, thanks in large part to the unfortunate injury to quarterback Derek Carr, we know how things have turned out since Week 3.
With Carr’s much-anticipated return to the field, the Saints simply had to win beat the Bryce Young-led Panthers yesterday … But they collapsed and failed.
An extremely telling sign came in the locker room after the disastrous defeat when star running back Alvin Kamara appeared to take a clear shot and Dennis Allen.
“We have confident guys, just may not be confident in something else,” Kamara said, which most people took as a reference to Allen and the coaching staff.
The Saints’ defense has been particularly underwhelming, allowing at least 20 points in six of their seven losses.
Following the defeat, Allen expressed his determination to improve, stating, “I’m going to work my a** off,” but it’s evident that his efforts have not been enough to turn the tide.
Despite a reputation for solid defensive strategies, this season has seen a significant decline, with the Saints ranking 26th in the league, giving up an average of 25.4 points per game.
The defensive roster features several established stars, including eight-time Pro Bowler Cam Jordan, as well as Tyrann Mathieu, Demario Davis, and Marshon Lattimore.
Yet, explosive plays have consistently plagued the unit, contributing to Allen’s ultimate firing.
On the offensive side, the Saints have averaged 23 points per game. While this figure is not particularly poor, it has not alleviated the pressure on the team.
Following a disappointing 9-8 season that resulted in missing the playoffs, this season was crucial for Allen to prove his worth. Winning just one division game proved insufficient for the organization, prompting the front office to make a decisive move.
Now sitting at 2-7, it will be fascinating to see how the rest of the season turns out for the Saints, especially since so many futures are at stake.
Stepping into the interim head coach role will be special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi.
What are your thoughts on the Saints decision to fire Allen in the middle of the season???
