As usual, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made waves during his weekly radio appearance this week.
Jones made comments that have reignited debate about the future of head coach Mike McCarthy. A former Cowboys star and many fans believe it’s long overdue for the team to part ways with Big Mike.
Jones made remarks suggesting that McCarthy may lack the ability to design effective offensive plays and concepts. This observation quickly caught the attention of former Cowboys All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant, who took to X to share his thoughts.
Bryant suggested that McCarthy should have been fired after last season’s playoff disappointment, arguing that defensive coordinator Dan Quinn would have been a better fit as head coach.
“Should have kept Dan Quinn and made him the head coach. These old ways is no longer in style for this new age of football,” Bryant posted.
There seems to be a passive-aggressive back-and-forth between Jones and McCarthy each and every week.
“We’re designing bad plays, or we’re designing bad concepts. The facts are that there’s some of that, but there’s also some execution issues,” Jones specifically said.
“There’s some of the talent. I like our talent, I really like our young talent, but young talent has a few more mistakes associated with it than if you’re dealing with a veteran player,” he added.
Interestingly, McCarthy made it clear that he doesn’t feel the same way as his boss.
“I talk to Jerry all the time. We have time to go through self-scout, so I didn’t see the comments specifically. (But) I don’t think we have bad concepts and bad plays. I’ll go back and check,” he said.
Another critic of the Cowboys’ offense is none other than legendary quarterback Troy Aikman who pointed the finger mainly at poor route-running.
“I think they run terrible routes. CeeDee’s gotta improve his route running. And a quarterback, if you’re not certain where your guys are going to be consistently, it is hard to play the position,” Aikman said.
“I see guys coming off lazy from the line of scrimmage. I am not speaking for Dak but as a former quarterback watching it, it has got to be a lot better.”
Right on cue, McCarthy shot back at Aikman’s criticism as well.
“They don’t carry weight with me, because I watch all the tape. I am part of the game, so I have a clear understanding of what and where. I mean, I don’t agree with Troy’s word selection,” he said.
The bottom line is the Cowboys are a mess right now. While there’s still plenty of time to turn things around, the clock is ticking.
Perhaps most importantly, the clock is ticking on Big Mike.
Dez Bryant is far from the only respected voice who is calling for McCarthy’s job. With each and every loss, the end of the road seemingly gets closer.
Will McCarthy and the Cowboys be able to turn their season around in time? … Or are we staring at the very real possibility that Bill Belichick will be taking over in Big D in 2025???
