It’s been quite a busy day in the NFL – and in particular, the AFC East.
Shortly after the New York Jets lost a heartbreaker to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football, they decided to trade for Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams.
Not to be outdone, the AFC East-leading Bills made a major move of their own, as it was just announced that they traded for Cleveland Browns receiver Amari Cooper.
As part of the trade agreement, the Bills will send a third-round and a seventh-round draft pick to Cleveland, while receiving a sixth-round pick in return.
The Bills solidified their position at the top of the AFC East with a narrow 23-20 victory over the Jets on Monday, now holding a 4-2 record and a two-game lead over New York.
Cooper, who is 30 years old, has recorded 24 receptions for 250 yards and two touchdowns this season with the struggling Browns (1-5).
Over his nine-year NFL career, Cooper has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in seven seasons and has been named to the Pro Bowl five times.
This trade could address a pressing need for the Bills, who have lacked a definitive No. 1 receiver since trading Stefon Diggs during the offseason.
Currently, Khalil Shakir leads the team with 249 receiving yards, followed closely by tight end Dalton Kincaid with 217 yards, and rookie receiver Keon Coleman at 201 yards.
In March, the Browns converted $18.79 million of Cooper’s $20 million salary into a signing bonus, providing some financial flexibility for this trade.
According to reports, Buffalo did not have the capacity to accommodate Adams’ remaining $11.6 million salary for the 2024 season, but they have now brought Cooper aboard and are only on the hook for just $806,667.
The Bills are set to host the Tennessee Titans this Sunday, where Cooper could make his debut with the team.
