The Detroit Lions picked up a massive win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and reminded the NFL world just how dangerous of a Super Bowl contender they are.
Unfortunately for Lions fans, the impressive victory was largely overshadowed by the devastating injury to star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.
Other than head coach Dan Campbell, it’s been Hutchinson who has become the face of the resurgent franchise.
On a team full of tough, old-school fighters, Hutch is the leader of the pack. This is precisely why the scene was so emotional when he went down on Sunday.
However, the show must go on. Despite the loss of Hutchinson, Detroit remains a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Also, Campbell made it clear that we may not have seen the last of Hutch this season.
Despite his surgery and the lengthy timetable for recovery, there is outside hope that Hutchinson could return in time for the Super Bowl if the Lions get that far.
As far as the here and now, Detroit fans are wondering how the team can fill the monstrous shoes left by Hutchinson.
Many have suggested that the Lions try to convince future Hall of Famer J.J. Watt to come out of retirement.
The 35-year-old Watt retired from the NFL following the 2022 season. Although he seems perfectly happy in retirement, he has hinted in the past about a possible comeback.
Some Lions fans have asked Watt about the topic directly on social media.
“How many times have you heard this today, coming out of retirement for the Lions? We know you are still in shape,” one fan asked Watt on X.
Watt responded with humor but hinted that he’s not planning a comeback: “Haha, once or twice. Lions fans, I see, hear, and appreciate you. Love your squad, love Detroit, and love Hutch. Gutted for him,” he posted in response.
The former Houston Texans star went on to share a glimpse into his post-football life.
“This morning I poured a cup of coffee and took a walk by the lake with my wife and son before breakfast. I’m very much enjoying this phase of life,” Watt added, signaling that his retirement is likely a permanent one. (Although he’s publicly stated that if the Texans need him, he’ll be back.)
Watt, who has faced his own series of significant injuries during his illustrious career – including a similar tibial plateau fracture that Hutchinson is now dealing with – was one of the first to express sympathy for Hutchinson when news of the injury broke.
On Monday, the Lions released a statement confirming that Hutchinson’s surgery was successful and that the young defensive end is expected to make a full recovery.
However, his absence for the rest of the season leaves a critical gap in Detroit’s defense, one that will be difficult to fill.
Detroit faces a daunting challenge ahead as they prepare for their first NFC North showdown of the season against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium this Sunday.
Although Hutchinson’s production on the field may be irreplaceable, the Lions will need to regroup quickly to keep their strong standing in the playoff picture.
