In one of the most bizarre situations we’ve seen in recent years, two-time Pro Bowler Haason Reddick has yet to take the field this season.
As a matter of fact, he’s yet to even report to his new team, the New York Jets.
Engaged in an ugly contract dispute where he holds zero leverage, speculation is growing about whether the Jets will trade Reddick.
The Dallas Cowboys have emerged as a potential landing spot for the 30-year-old defensive stud who has racked up 58 sacks and 16 forced fumbles during the course of his impressive career.
Dan Graziano of ESPN recently mentioned the Cowboys as a possible destination for Reddick, particularly given the recent injuries to star pass rushers DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler also acknowledged the fit but noted the challenges for Dallas in making a move for Reddick.
“I’m with you on Dallas, Dan, though Reddick would be too costly for them,” Fowler stated. He added, “Perhaps the Cowboys comb the middle-tier pass rush market. The early plan is to see how much backups, such as Marshawn Kneeland, can handle, hope Parsons returns soon, and go from there. It could be a week-to-week discussion as far as how much they’d add.”
Fowler is not the only one who views Reddick-to-Dallas as being interesting, yet unlikely.
The Cowboys, currently grappling with defensive struggles, most recently posted a crucial 20-15 road win over the New York Giants last Thursday.
However, that victory came with setbacks. Lawrence has since been placed on injured reserve, while Parsons’ status for their Week 5 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers remains in doubt.
Dallas has allowed an average of 26 points per game so far, ranking 27th in the NFL, and their defensive sack rate sits at a poor 6.45%, putting them 21st overall.
Adding a player of Reddick’s caliber could bolster their defense, but it won’t come cheap. The Pro Bowler is owed $14.25 million in base salary this season.
Reddick, who was sent to the Jets in a trade with Philadelphia for a 2026 third-round pick, made the Pro Bowl in both of his seasons with the Eagles.
If the Cowboys decide to make a move, he would bring experience and talent to a defense in need of help. However, financial and practical challenges make a deal far from certain.
As talented as Reddick is, the Cowboys also have to factor in the constat drama surrounding him. If the Jets trade him, it would mean he’d be heading to his fifth team in eight years.
The way he’s handling his current situation has turned off a lot of people in the football world. Perhaps Dallas will decide that he’s just not worth the headache.
