49ers, Cowboys & Patriots Fighting Over All-Pro Star

After tearing his ACL in Week 8 of the 2024 season, Stefon Diggs’ future in the NFL remains uncertain.

At 31 years old and set to hit free agency, the former All-Pro wide receiver faces a shrinking market, with teams hesitant to invest in a veteran coming off a significant knee injury.

However, two Super Bowl contenders – the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys – could emerge as potential landing spots, according to TheMMQB’s Albert Breer.

“Therein may lay the key for [Stefon Diggs]’s success this year – with the likelihood that he won’t be fully cleared until at least training camp,” Breer began.

“The best place for him, it seems, would be with a contender where he wouldn’t have to be the guy, which would mitigate potential issues with his desire for the ball and also alleviate the frustration that losing can bring a guy with his sort of makeup.”

While Diggs’ days as a true No. 1 receiver look to be behind him, Breer believes he still has value – just in a more complementary role.

“Is that place out there for him? San Francisco would make sense, at the right price. Dallas might, too, with his brother already there…

“And at this point, those teams would have a pretty good idea of what they’re getting,” Breer continued. “He can be mercurial. He can get caught up in his emotions and his numbers. But ultimately, he’s actually a really good guy who badly wants to win and works his butt off to do just that.”

If Diggs is looking for the best fit, Dallas may have the edge.

The Cowboys already have a clear-cut No. 1 receiver in CeeDee Lamb, which means Diggs wouldn’t be expected to carry the offense.

Plus, he would stay in Texas and reunite with his brother, Trevon Diggs, in a locker room that already has a family connection.

San Francisco, on the other hand, presents more risk.

While the 49ers boast another elite roster, they recently traded Deebo Samuel and could be hesitant to rely on both Diggs and Brandon Aiyuk – who is also recovering from an ACL tear – to be fully healthy in 2025.

With Brock Purdy due for a massive contract extension, the team may not want to invest heavily in an aging receiver with injury concerns.

For now, Diggs remains one of the bigger names on the free-agent market, but his future hinges on how teams view his ability to bounce back from injury.

Interestingly, the receiver-needy New England Patriots are reportedly interested in Diggs as well.

It’s safe to assume all three teams know the headaches that will most likely come with Diggs… But culture is everything – and despite being a young and unproven group, you know Vrabel won’t allow any nonsense in New England.

What are your thoughts on Diggs? … How much does he truly have left in the tank?

When it’s all said and done, where do you think he ends up???
