The San Francisco 49ers find themselves at a pivotal juncture as they navigate through a challenging transitional period. After a disappointing 2024 season that saw them win only six games and bring up the rear in the NFC West, it’s clear that the franchise is looking to recalibrate. This offseason, they made the bold decision to streamline their roster by moving on from some older, higher-priced players, and it seems that their focus on future cap flexibility may have hindered their chances to land a big-name wide receiver.
Rumblings surfaced that the 49ers had an eye on star receiver Davante Adams during free agency, as reported by Michael Silver. Adams himself shed some light on negotiations, sharing, “I was entertaining the Niners, but they were like, ‘We’re paying wholesale. We ain’t paying retail.’” It’s evident that while interest existed, the financial dialogue didn’t align with Adams’ expectations, and instead of a reunion with the 49ers, he found a new home with the Rams.
Despite contending with a much-maligned offense in New York during the past season, Adams proved he still possesses elite receiving skills, racking up 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns. Not to mention, his earlier stint in Las Vegas showcased his capacity, adding 18 receptions for 209 yards and a touchdown. Imagine what Adams could have brought to the 49ers—especially considering his roots in East Palo Alto, just a stone’s throw from San Francisco’s training facility. That connection would have been a compelling narrative, to say the least.
As it stands, the 49ers’ receiving corps features Brandon Aiyuk, former first-rounder Ricky Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings. While adding another top-tier receiver would have been a nice boon, it doesn’t seem to be their primary focus at the draft’s top. However, the front office may still be inclined to keep a watchful eye on wide receivers in the mid-rounds to bolster depth.
Looking ahead to the 2025 NFL Draft, the 49ers may very well prioritize enhancing their defense. A defensive back or edge rusher could be at the forefront of their strategy. As for the receiver class, while not as loaded as last year’s offering, there are certainly contributors to be had in the second and third rounds. Keep an eye on names like Jayden Higgins, Tre Harris, Jaylin Noel, and Jalen Royals as potential targets on day two—these players could add valuable depth and production to the San Francisco offense in the seasons ahead.
The 49ers are clearly in a rebuilding phase, and while the spotlight may not be on wide receiver in the opening round of the draft, expect them to remain proactive as they lay the foundation for future success.
