The Arizona Diamondbacks are in a dogfight this season in the National League West, posting a 36-35 record which sees them holding onto fourth place in one of baseball’s most competitive divisions. What happens over the next few weeks will be crucial, especially as they consider their moves leading up to the trade deadline. If Arizona decides to make some changes, the New York Yankees could be eyeing them closely.

The Yankees have their sights set on capturing a World Series title, something that has eluded them since 2009. To bolster their chances, a big bat acquisition is in order, and Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez might just be the perfect addition to their arsenal.

ESPN’s Buster Olney has noted that the Yankees would certainly have an interest in Suarez if he becomes available.

“Hazen will have a lot of say about what happens at this year’s trade deadline. If Arizona decides to deal, they’ll have an enticing collection of talent to offer. Players like Josh Naylor, Merrill Kelly, and Zac Gallen are among those that could draw interest. Suarez, in particular, would be on the Yankees’ radar,” Olney wrote, highlighting the high regard general managers have for Hazen’s communication and decisiveness in negotiations.

The Yankees, aware of the need for offensive potency to enhance their strong lineup, could find Suarez to be an ideal power hitter to fill that void. The 33-year-old Suarez is having quite the season, hammering 21 home runs with an impressive 57 RBIs. Yes, his batting average of .233 isn’t eye-popping, but his power numbers more than compensate for it.

His batting line stands at .233/.307/.527 with an .834 OPS, demonstrating his knack for making hard contact. His exceptional power and high barrel rate could perfectly complement Yankee Stadium’s hitter-friendly dimensions.

Defensively, Suarez has had his struggles, as shown by his -3 Outs Above Average rating at third base. But the Yankees have long valued offensive prowess over defensive liabilities, a philosophy that could work in Suarez’s favor. Moreover, with an expiring $15 million contract, his addition offers both minimal long-term commitment and significant potential for offensive fireworks.

In essence, if the Diamondbacks choose to make moves, Suarez might just be the power-hitting catalyst the Yankees need to reignite their championship aspirations.
