Initially believed to be caused by asphyxiation, authorities later confirmed that Miller’s death resulted from carbon monoxide poisoning. According to the Judicial Investigation Agency in Costa Rica, toxic levels of carbon monoxide were found in the family’s hotel room, leading to the sudden and devastating loss.
“Carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of death of the teenage son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner,” ESPN reported, citing the director of the Judicial Investigation Agency. Testing confirmed the presence of carboxyhemoglobin, a compound formed when carbon monoxide binds with hemoglobin in the blood.
Gardner, a fan favorite and longtime clubhouse leader, spent all 14 years of his MLB career with the Yankees. He was a key contributor to the team’s 2009 World Series championship and earned an All-Star selection in 2015 along with a Gold Glove in 2016. Known for his work ethic and leadership, Gardner’s connection to the organization remains strong even in retirement.
In the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, the Yankees organization has shown overwhelming support for Gardner and his family. Players, coaches, and team staff have honored Miller’s memory with messages of love and solidarity.
