Scott Frost’s stint as head coach of Nebraska’s football team certainly didn’t go as planned. The excitement was palpable when the former Huskers quarterback, fresh off a successful run with UCF, was tasked with revitalizing his alma mater. Yet, despite the promise, Nebraska’s football program floundered under his guidance.

Reflecting on his five seasons, Frost, now 50, shared a candid lesson learned: “Don’t take the wrong job.” During a conversation with Chris Vannini from The Athletic, Frost revealed, “I said I wouldn’t leave [UCF] unless it was someplace you could win a national championship. I got tugged in a direction to try to help my alma mater and didn’t really want to do it. It wasn’t a good move. I’m lucky to get back to a place where I was a lot happier.”

His straightforward remarks have sparked quite a buzz on social media. Comments poured in, with some users expressing surprise at his forthrightness about Nebraska. One remarked, “Damn he dissed his own Alma mater,” while another added, “Or don’t take a job and spend more time (allegedly) drinking than you do working.” Meanwhile, a fan pointed out, “Correction: ‘don’t take the job you aren’t willing to put the effort in, and show up for.'”

This candid reflection didn’t sit well with everyone. Mike Schaefer from 247 weighed in, questioning the environment that such an attitude could foster, “What kind of environment would this be to work in? To play in? Multiple chances to own it. And Scott Frost simply never does.”

As another observer noted, “Could’ve taken the high road but chose to say this about his alma mater instead. Strange.”

Nebraska’s passionate fanbase probably won’t appreciate Frost’s blunt assessment of his tenure and alma mater. Returning to UCF, after a year away from college football, Frost will now attempt to reignite the dominance the Knights experienced during his and Josh Heupel’s coaching years in the American Athletic Conference in the late 2010s.
