It’s still early, but the Heisman Trophy buzz is already starting to build for Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway. He’s coming off an up-and-down freshman season, but he showed flashes of brilliance, and the Gators finished strong.
SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum believes Lagway has a real shot at the Heisman if the Gators can put together a strong season and contend for a playoff spot. It won’t be easy, as they face a tough schedule, but Lagway has the talent and the opportunity to make a run at the prestigious award.
Lagway’s first season at Florida was a rollercoaster. He started the year as a backup but was thrust into the starting role due to an injury to Graham Mertz. He had a record-breaking debut, throwing for over 450 yards and three touchdowns, but he also struggled with consistency and turnovers.
Despite the ups and downs, Lagway showed enough promise to generate excitement for the future. If he can take a step forward in his development and lead the Gators to a successful season, he could be the next Gator to bring the Heisman Trophy back to Gainesville.
