The Los Angeles Rams will be without one of their star players when the 2025 NFL season kicks off, as wide receiver Cooper Kupp revealed that the team has informed him of their plans to trade him.
“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championship,” Kupp shared earlier this week.
The former Super Bowl MVP expressed supreme disappointment in the decision, admitting that he had envisioned spending his entire career with the Rams.
“I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA. Still, if there’s one thing that I have learned over the years: there are so many things that are out of your control, but it is how you respond to these things that you will look back on and remember,” he said.
Despite the unexpected news, Kupp remained focused on the road ahead and regaining his Pro Bowl level on the field.
“I have taken so much pride in playing alongside my teammates for the LA community, so thank you for embracing my family and making this such a special place for us,” he continued.
“2024 began with one of the best training camps of my career. Preparations start now for 2025. Highly motivated, as healthy as ever, and looking forward to playing elite football for years to come. Love you guys … But coming for it all.”
News of Kupp’s potential departure quickly spread, prompting reactions from fans and players alike.
Among those who spoke out was Kelly Stafford, the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
She initially responded with a heartbroken emoji before later sharing a more personal message for the Kupp family.
“People don’t understand what all you bring to the game…Beyond your insane talent. This one hurts,” she posted on social media.
Of course, Matthew and Kelly Stafford are well known in Detroit from their days with the Lions.
Interestingly, the Lions are one of the many teams who are expected to be interested in trading for Kupp.
Unlike some of the other teams, Detroit has some factors working in their favor. For instance, current Lions general manager Brad Holmes was director of college scouting for the Rams when they selected Kupp in the fourth round of the 2017 draft.
In addition, current assistant general manager Ray Agnew was also part of that Rams front office that drafted Kupp. At the time, Agnew was in his first season as director of pro personnel for the Rams.
What are your thoughts on the rumors that the Lions are the favorites to land Kupp?
Of course, other teams such as the Bills, Steelers, Patriots, Broncos and Cowboys are expected to be battling for Kupp as well.
However, maybe just maybe, Kupp will end up finding himself on Stafford’s old team after all … What do you think???
