Josh Giddey and the Chicago Bulls find themselves in a contract impasse that’s grabbing attention around the league. The 22-year-old rising star is reportedly eyeing a new deal that would pay him around $30 million annually, but the negotiation process is proving to be anything but straightforward.
On paper, the Bulls have the financial flexibility to meet Giddey’s demands. However, the reality of the situation is that they hold the leverage, as there aren’t many teams in a position to offer a contract of that magnitude. This raises an important question: Will Giddey accept the team’s qualifying offer, effectively playing out the final year of his deal, or will he come to terms on a long-term contract that falls short of his initial aspirations?
In a recent poll conducted by The Athletic, 16 NBA front office executives shared their insights on Giddey’s market value. The consensus was that very few would be willing to pay more than $25 million per year. Interestingly, 14 of those 16 participants suggested a more moderate average annual salary between $20 million and $25 million.
Yet, while the figures may not align with Giddey’s expectations, there’s a strong sentiment among these executives that he warrants at least a four-year contract—an important consideration given the new collective bargaining agreement. As one executive pointed out, “If you’re offering a four-year contract, you have to be correct. But Giddey, you could offer a four-year deal.”
Giddey began his professional journey with the Oklahoma City Thunder but sought a trade to avoid a diminished role as his career progressed. The Chicago Bulls took a calculated risk in June 2024, acquiring him in a deal that sent Alex Caruso to the Thunder, banking on Giddey’s potential for an upward trajectory.
Last season, Giddey demonstrated his versatility and potential, showcasing improved three-point shooting and compiling impressive averages of 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals over 70 regular-season games. With those statistics in mind, a fully guaranteed deal spanning four or more years might serve as a practical compromise for both Giddey and the Bulls.
As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on this situation. Both sides are at a pivotal crossroads, and how they navigate this negotiation could set the tone for both Giddey’s future and the Bulls’ aspirations in the immediate years ahead.
