Deone Walker Will Not Go In the First Round

Kentucky defensive tackle Deone Walker greets fans at the team's Catwalk before the Vanderbilt game Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024 in Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky defensive tackle Deone Walker is a man amongst boys. At 6’7″ and 353 pounds, he’s an absolute force in the trenches. But can he translate that size and strength to the NFL? That’s the question scouts will be asking in Mobile.

Walker needs to prove he can handle the speed and conditioning demands of the pro game. If he dominates in one-on-ones and shows he can go full speed for extended periods, he could solidify his first-round status. But if he struggles, he could tumble down draft boards. The Senior Bowl is his chance to silence the doubters and prove he’s worth the hype.

Some scouts have compared Walker to Vita Vea, the massive defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Like Vea, Walker has the potential to be a dominant run-stuffer and a disruptive force in the passing game. However, Vea has proven his ability to stay on the field and be a consistent contributor. Walker needs to show that same level of stamina and durability.

The Senior Bowl will be a crucial test for Walker. He’ll be facing some of the best offensive linemen in the country, and he’ll need to show that he can hold his own. If he can do that, he could be a top pick in the draft.
