Love him or hate him, Cam Newton has certainly never been one to hold back his opinion on just about anything.
Speaking of which, Newton recently expressed just how disappointed he is with the universal lack-of-interest there’s been in signing him around the league.
In the latest episode of his show “4th & 1 with Cam Newton,” the 2015 NFL MVP shared his frustration after not receiving a call from the Washington Commanders, despite his past relationship with their former head coach Ron Rivera.
Newton, who was the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, spent nine seasons with Rivera at the Carolina Panthers.
Together, they turned the struggling franchise around, culminating in a near-perfect 15-1 season in 2015 and an appearance in Super Bowl 50, where they ultimately fell to the Denver Broncos.
During the show, Newton admitted that he was surprised and hurt by the lack of interest from Washington, especially given that the team was led by Rivera, along with other former Panthers staff members like Marty Hurney and Ryan Vermillion.
“I don’t know, it hurt me though,” Newton said, admitting that he expected an offer from Washington. “I said, at the bare minimum, Washington would come f*ck with me.
“It wasn’t just Ron Rivera, it was damn (former executive) Marty Hurney, it was (former head athletic trainer) Ryan Vermillion, everybody. It was Panthers reincarnated in Washington.
“To not get no call? … It f*cked with me though. I ain’t gonna lie.”
It should be noted that Newton was terrible in the final few years of his career.
After a disastrous stint with the New England Patriots, Newton found his way back to Carolina where he was equally as ineffective.
Age and physical wear-and-tear took their toll on Newton who last took an NFL snap back in 2021.
Meanwhile, Rivera’s tenure with the Commanders came to an end last season, after four challenging seasons that saw the team struggle with consistent quarterback play.
During Rivera’s time in Washington, eight different quarterbacks started at least one game, but Newton was never among them.
“You’ve been through the struggle with him, and then to not get a call, yeah it was one of them sh*t like, ‘OK, I see what’s happening here,'” Newton concluded.
What are your thoughts on Newton not getting a call from Washington (or anyone for that matter)???
