Bill Belichick is the new head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team. Yes, 29-year NFL head coach Bill Belichick. Yes, the same guy who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowls in his 24 seasons as the head coach. After mutually parting ways with the Patriots in 2023, Belichick was still very present in the football world. He appeared weekly on various ESPN programs such as The Pat McAfee Show and Manningcast. He knows and loves the game of football and that is obvious.
North Carolina finished 6-6 and 10th in the ACC this year. They parted ways with former head coach Mack Brown before the last game but agreed to coach them in their final regular season game. Although Mack Brown has an 113-78-1 in his 16 seasons spent at UNC, athletic director, Bubba Cunningham felt it was time to go in a new direction.
Belichick and UNC have a reportedly 5-year, 50 million dollar deal. If true, Belichick would be one of 7 FBS coaches to make that much per year. Although Bill does not have any prior collegiate experience watching Jedd Fisch and his son coach at the University of Washington this past season gave him confidence that his NFL scheme will work just fine in college. Other college coaches have sung his praises and believe that his “old school” ways will work fine in college.
With NIL and the Transfer Portal turning into NFL Free Agency, there’s no better guy to look toward than Belichick. Questions about recruiting? Don’t. These kids dream of playing in the NFL and winning Super Bowls. All Belichick has to do is point them to his room full of accomplishments (I’m sure he has one). With his 9 AFC Championships, 6 Super Bowls, and not to mention coaching the 199th pick of the 2000 draft to be arguably the best quarterback of all time he has an incredible resume to show. He provides years of experience, a winning culture, and a hard-nosed mentality. With a career .652 win percentage, don’t be shocked to see this UNC team make a run at the ACC Championship and the College Football Playoffs in the next few years.
