Angels Will Force Anthony Rendon to Retire After This Season

The Los Angeles Angels find themselves in a frustratingly familiar position: mired in mediocrity despite possessing two of the game’s most electrifying talents in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. The team’s inability to translate individual brilliance into postseason success has been a recurring theme, and the blame often falls on owner Arte Moreno’s reluctance to invest in a well-rounded roster.

The Angels’ financial woes were further compounded by the departure of Shohei Ohtani in free agency. The team’s failure to make a competitive offer to retain the two-way superstar not only alienated fans but also underscored Moreno’s questionable spending habits.

Now, the Angels are facing another financial setback with Anthony Rendon’s impending hip surgery. The 34-year-old third baseman, who signed a massive seven-year, $245 million contract in 2020, has been plagued by injuries throughout his tenure with the team.

Rendon’s production has plummeted since his first season with the Angels, and his frequent trips to the injured list have made his contract one of the worst in baseball history. His recent comments about baseball not being a top priority for him have further fueled fan frustration.

With Rendon’s future uncertain and his contract nearing its end, retirement seems like a real possibility. The Angels’ inability to surround Trout and Ohtani with a supporting cast capable of contending for a championship has led to years of disappointment. Rendon’s injury woes and declining production only add to the team’s woes, leaving fans wondering if the Angels will ever capitalize on the talents of their generational superstars.
