In 2018, while playing for Washington, Smith suffered a catastrophic leg injury. The fractures to his tibia and fibula were severe, and complications arose when he developed a serious infection post-surgery.
The situation became so dire that doctors considered amputating his leg to save his life.
Defying the odds, Smith embarked on a rigorous recovery journey and made a triumphant return to the field in 2020, playing eight games for Washington.
His resilience and determination earned him widespread admiration.
Today, Smith is a respected NFL analyst for ESPN, where he continues to share his expertise and passion for the game.
Smith’s injury has not deterred his zest for life and athletic pursuits. He recently completed his second Pan-Mass Challenge, a grueling two-day, 200-mile bike ride dedicated to raising funds for cancer research.
Reflecting on his journey, Smith told CBS News, “I’m incredibly lucky. My journey and given where I was at and where I am today. I’m exactly that. I’m grateful.
“Things had to go right, and they did. I’m grateful for such a great team including my family who helped me get through that.”
