Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady reacts to a video from Patrick Mahomes as she's given a golden ticket to the AUSL draft, Friday, March 27, 2026, at Tracy Sellers Field.

The milestone arrived on a Thursday night in Lubbock, mid-game against BYU, the way big numbers often do — as a footnote to an otherwise dominant performance. NiJaree Canady had already been dealing for several innings when she recorded her 1,000th career strikeout, becoming the 102nd pitcher in NCAA history to reach that mark.

By the time it was over, Canady had struck out 17 batters in 9.1 innings of work and allowed just one earned run. Texas Tech won 11-1 in six innings. The senior ace improved to 15-2 on the season with a 1.29 ERA. And when the NFCA released its Week 9 poll on Tuesday, April 7, the Red Raiders were back at No. 1.

A Milestone Performance

Reaching 1,000 career strikeouts is a benchmark that defines elite pitching in college softball. Only 102 pitchers in the long history of Division I softball have done it, and Canady arrived there in a performance that captured everything that makes her special. She did not coast to the number — she posted one of the best games of her senior season to get there.

The Big 12 Conference recognized her work by naming Canady its Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season. It is a routine honor for a player who has been anything but routine throughout her career at Texas Tech.

Back to No. 1

Texas Tech’s return to the top of the rankings did not come from winning a marquee series. It came because No. 1 Texas lost to Alabama. But the Red Raiders — who entered Week 9 on a 13-game winning streak — have earned the top spot on their own merits. At 37-2, they are one of the two or three most complete teams in the country.

The ranking carries extra weight because of what comes next. Texas Tech travels to Salt Lake City this weekend for a three-game road series against Utah (ESPN+, April 10-12). Road games against Big 12 competition are no formality, and Canady will likely open the series on Friday. A strong weekend would cement the Red Raiders as the clear No. 1 heading into the final three weeks of the regular season.

The Bigger Stage Ahead

Earlier this season, Canady received the first AUSL Golden Ticket of 2026, awarded to her in a surprise on-field ceremony before a game against Iowa State. Commissioner Kim Ng and Patrick Mahomes presented the ticket — a designation signaling that Canady will be among the most coveted players entering professional softball after her college career ends. It was a moment that underscored what the broader softball world thinks of her.

Now, with 1,000 career strikeouts in the books and a No. 1 ranking, Canady is in the final stretch of a career that has redefined what is possible for a college pitcher. The question is no longer what she has done — it is how high she can go before the season ends.

What’s Next

Texas Tech opens at Utah on Friday evening (ESPN+). With the SEC race moving quickly and the WCWS bracket implications growing louder, No. 1 cannot be a passive title. Canady’s next starts will determine whether the Red Raiders can hold the top spot — and whether she adds to her already historic strikeout total going into the postseason. Eyes on Lubbock, and on Salt Lake City this weekend.
