The waiting is almost over. The Women’s College World Series — the biggest stage in college softball — opens Thursday, May 28, at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, and the opening-day schedule is everything fans could ask for.

Eight teams, four games, all broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2. Whether you’re a lifelong softball fan or someone who is just discovering the sport, Thursday is the day to tune in.

The Full Opening-Day Schedule

Here is the complete Thursday schedule for Day 1 of the 2026 WCWS:

Noon ET on ESPN: No. 3 Texas Tech vs. No. 5 Mississippi State
2:30 PM ET on ESPN: No. 1 Texas vs. No. 2 Tennessee
7:00 PM ET on ESPN2: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 2 UCLA
9:30 PM ET on ESPN2: No. 1 Nebraska vs. No. 2 Arkansas

The tournament uses a double-elimination format, meaning every game carries enormous weight from the very first pitch. A team that drops its opener is immediately pushed into the loser’s bracket, where one more loss ends its season. There is no easing into the Women’s College World Series.

Game 1: Texas Tech vs. Mississippi State (Noon ET, ESPN)

This might be the most intriguing opening game of the tournament. Texas Tech, making their second consecutive WCWS appearance, is anchored by NiJaree Canady — the only active pitcher in college softball with 1,000 or more career strikeouts and 96 career wins. The Red Raiders know this stage and they know how to perform on it.

Mississippi State has never been to Devon Park before. They earned this trip by pulling off one of the most stunning super regional upsets in recent memory, defeating No. 1 Oklahoma 6-0 in Game 3 as Delainey Everett threw a complete-game shutout. The Bulldogs have nothing to lose and the kind of momentum that terrifies experienced programs.

This is a collision between experience and fearlessness, and it will set the tone for the entire tournament.

Game 2: Texas vs. Tennessee (2:30 PM ET, ESPN)

The marquee matchup of opening day. Texas enters as the defending national champion — the Longhorns won the 2025 WCWS title and are back for their third consecutive WCWS appearance. They won the SEC Tournament for their first conference title since 2005, proving that the championship pedigree runs deep through this program.

Tennessee swept Georgia in the Knoxville Super Regional to punch their ticket to Oklahoma City for the second straight year, which is the Volunteers’ 10th WCWS appearance in program history. The Vols are experienced, motivated, and facing the team they would most like to knock off.

This game lives in a prime 2:30 PM slot for a reason. It has the feel of a championship preview.

Game 3: Alabama vs. UCLA (7:00 PM ET, ESPN2)

No. 1 overall seed Alabama has pitched 22 shutouts this season with a 1.60 team ERA. They enter the WCWS at 49-7 and represent the most complete pitching staff in the country. This is the 16th WCWS appearance in program history, and the Crimson Tide are not here for the experience — they are here for the title.

UCLA counters with a lineup that features Megan Grant, who set the all-time NCAA home run record this season. The Bruins are dangerous, and they match Alabama’s pedigree with their own rich WCWS history. This is a prime-time matchup between two programs that know how to win on the biggest stage.

Game 4: Nebraska vs. Arkansas (9:30 PM ET, ESPN2)

The nightcap features another first-timer. Arkansas is making their inaugural WCWS appearance alongside Mississippi State as this year’s first-time programs. The Razorbacks’ arrival at Devon Park is a significant moment for a program that has worked to build a national-level competitor in the SEC.

Nebraska is the sole Big Ten representative alongside UCLA and brings a steady program to a field dominated by the SEC. This late-night game will reward fans who stay up — and both programs are fully capable of producing a statement result in their first game at Devon Park.
