Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens (23) points her finger up after winning a NCAA super regionals softball game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers and advancing to the Women's College World Series at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on May 25, 2025. Tennessee won 1-0 against Nebraska.

77 Wins, Zero Losses, Five Programs

Five Division I softball teams are still undefeated heading into the final week before conference play, and the list is a fascinating mix of established powers and programs making national noise for the first time. No. 1 Tennessee sits at 14-0, outscoring opponents 113-5 through 14 games. No. 4 Alabama is also 14-0 after sweeping Florida State and climbing to their highest ranking in recent seasons. No. 6 Florida leads the group with 19 wins and zero losses, the best start in program history since 2016.

Then there are the newcomers. Grand Canyon is 16-0 and just entered the Softball America Top 25 at No. 23 — a WAC program that’s earned its spot through consistent results rather than name recognition. North Carolina is 14-0 and debuted at No. 25, quietly building one of the strongest starts in Tar Heel softball history. Combined, that’s 77-0 across five programs spanning three conferences and two levels of national expectation.

The SEC Problem

Three of the five undefeated teams — Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida — play in the SEC, which is also the deepest conference in college softball with six ranked teams. That creates a simple mathematical reality: when SEC play opens March 6, at least some of those zeros have to go. Tennessee and Alabama will eventually face each other, meaning at least one streak ends in a head-to-head matchup between unbeatens. Florida faces its first real test even sooner — the Gators play No. 10 UCLA at the Judi Garman Classic on Thursday night.

History doesn’t favor long unbeaten runs through SEC play. The conference features No. 5 Arkansas (13-1), No. 16 Mississippi State, and No. 17 LSU in addition to the three undefeated programs. Every weekend in March will feature ranked-vs-ranked matchups where something has to give. The question isn’t whether these streaks end — it’s which team holds on the longest.

Grand Canyon and North Carolina: How Far Can They Go?

Grand Canyon’s 16-0 start is a program milestone. The Lopes compete in the WAC, where the conference schedule is less punishing than the SEC or Big 12, which means their unbeaten run has a realistic chance of extending deeper into March. North Carolina faces a different test — the ACC features programs like Virginia Tech (No. 11) and Duke (No. 22), and the Tar Heels will need to prove their 14-0 record holds up against conference competition.

Both programs represent the broader competitive depth that’s defined the 2026 season. Programs outside the traditional Power 4 elite are posting legitimate results, and the Softball America poll is rewarding them. Whether GCU and UNC can sustain their runs through conference play will say a lot about whether 2026’s parity is real or a product of early-season scheduling.

What’s Next

Florida’s Thursday matchup against UCLA at the Judi Garman Classic is the first real threat to any of these five records. After that, the Big 12 opens March 5 and the SEC follows on March 6, setting up a week that will almost certainly thin this list. Enjoy the perfection while it lasts — by mid-March, a combined 77-0 will look like a distant memory.
