But there’s an asterisk hanging over this record that every softball observer can see: Florida hasn’t played a single ranked opponent.
That changes Thursday night at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California, when No. 6 Florida faces No. 10 UCLA at 10:30 PM PT. It’s the matchup this season has been building toward — the nation’s best unbeaten record against a UCLA team that just dominated the Mary Nutter Classic.
UCLA Brings the Heat
If Florida is looking for a gentle introduction to ranked competition, UCLA is the wrong opponent. The Bruins went 5-0 at the Mary Nutter Classic, including a 23-1 demolition of Auburn that featured an 18-run third inning — one of the most explosive single innings in recent NCAA softball history. UCLA’s season arc adds intrigue. The Bruins stumbled at the Clearwater Invitational in early February, going 2-3 and raising questions about their ability to compete against elite programs. They responded with a perfect Mary Nutter run and climbed from No. 12 to No. 10 in the Week 4 rankings. The Clearwater-to-Mary Nutter redemption arc gives UCLA a “nothing to lose, everything to prove” mentality heading into the Judi Garman.
The Pitching Matchup That Defines the Weekend
The Florida-UCLA game comes down to a fundamental question: can Rothrock’s pitching neutralize UCLA’s power?
