In a devastating turn of events, South Dakota State University confirms the untimely passing of 20-year-old running back Nate White. The young athlete, whose journey began at Wisconsin, was in the midst of making his mark at South Dakota State after transferring.

White’s transition in the fall of 2024 from wide receiver to running back was a significant one. He was looking to carve out a new role in the Jackrabbits’ offense, eager to contribute and showcase his skills. Unfortunately, he never had the chance to shine on the field with his new team.

Coach Dan Jackson expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating, “Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of the loss of Nate White. Nate impacted our program with his hard work, determination, and overall positive spirit. We grieve with his family and will honor his memory throughout the upcoming season.” Jackson’s words reflect the tight-knit community that college football fosters, especially in moments of tragedy.

In a similar vein, South Dakota State University President Barry Dunn shared his condolences, highlighting the bond White had forged during his brief time at the school. “While Nate had not been on campus long, he was not only beloved by his teammates and coaches, but also by faculty and those who had the opportunity to get to know him,” Dunn said. His passing resonates not only within Jackrabbit territory but across the wider university community, touching the hearts of supporters throughout the state and beyond.

Sadly, the cause of White’s death has yet to be disclosed, leaving many searching for answers. Before stepping onto the collegiate stage, White made a name for himself at Rufus King High School, where he dazzled the football world with an impressive junior year, amassing 1,163 rushing yards and scoring 22 touchdowns, along with earning the conference’s offensive player of the year honors.

The shockwaves of this loss have also been felt at Wisconsin, where he played prior to transferring. Head coach Luke Fickell shared his sorrow with a heartfelt message to the Badger football family, noting the difficulty of comprehending such a tragic event.

In these moments, our thoughts turn towards the White family, his teammates, and all those who had the privilege of knowing this talented young man.
