Legendary college football coach Urban Meyer has shared his thoughts on whether Michigan’s 2023 national title should be vacated in light of the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal.
Meyer, who led the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2012 to 2018, famously went 7-0 against Michigan during his tenure.
Since his departure, Ryan Day has taken over as head coach of the Buckeyes, but has struggled in the rivalry, losing four straight games to the Wolverines, despite winning the national championship last season.
Michigan has been embroiled in controversy due to allegations of sign-stealing, with the NCAA still investigating the matter.
Michigan announced that head coach Sherrone Moore will be suspended for two games this coming season as part of the fallout from the scandal.
When asked about the possibility of vacating Michigan’s 2023 national championship, Meyer made it clear that he doesn’t believe such a drastic move is warranted.
“Yeah, I’ve been blown up all morning about that. I say pump the brakes. Don’t even go there,” Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast.
“When you start seeing about coaches that can’t coach, you know, you went through this, and you see the word show-cause, show-cause, in my understanding, means you can’t coach.
“If someone wants to hire you, you’re not allowed to coach. So, obviously there’s some stuff there, but once again I defer until everything comes out, and I hope it does. I hope everything comes out.
“And so at some point you can move past this because this is like a black cloud that’s been hanging for a while.”
Meyer also dismissed the idea of vacating wins or titles as “laughable.”
“Everyone starts laughing,” Meyer continued. “Vacate what wins? Seven years ago, six years ago, four years ago. You know, that has no impact on, you know, that’s the risk-reward.
“You can vacate all the wins you want. Now, obviously this discussion will come up. You know, you start vacating wins from a national championship season, that’s a problem.
“But I think Tennessee had some wins vacated, if I remember, right, maybe Arizona State, the teams weren’t very good. So who cares? The risk-reward is in full effect there.
“That means there’s no risk and a great reward, I guess, if you do the things they’re doing. So you hear the word vacated wins, everybody rolls their eyes in college sports.”
Meyer’s comments add to the ongoing debate regarding the fallout from Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal and the status of their 2023 national title victory.
As the investigation continues, many are left wondering whether the Wolverines will face further repercussions.
What are your thoughts on Meyer’s stance? … Do YOU think Michigan’s national title should be yanked???
