As the start of the college football season draws closer, teams are already working tirelessly to address their weaknesses in pursuit of a national championship.
One team looking to bounce back and reclaim its dominance is the Georgia Bulldogs.
Despite winning back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022, Georgia has struggled in the College Football Playoff since, failing to secure another postseason victory.
Looking ahead, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum expressed significant concerns about Georgia’s future as they approach the upcoming season, with the quarterback position being his biggest point of uncertainty.
“You have to feel good about Georgia,” Finebaum said. “It’s just, how good? This will be the first time in a while they haven’t gone into the season No. 1 in the country.
“They won’t be far off of that. I think that will maybe help them a little bit. My biggest question is the quarterback. What are we going to see from Gunner Stockton?”
Gunner Stockton, who is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, has a mixed record thus far in his college career.
Over his time as a backup to Carson Beck, who has since transferred to the Miami Hurricanes, Stockton has completed 68.7% of his passes, throwing for 588 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Though Stockton’s playing time has been limited, he was very impressive – given the circumstances – when forced to take over for Beck last season.
Showing great poise, Stockton helped lead the Bulldogs to a big-time win in the SEC Championship Game against Texas.
Then, against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the playoffs, Stockton threw for 234 yards and completed 62.5% of his passes, contributing one touchdown.
However, Georgia’s effort fell short as they were defeated 23-10 by the Irish. Unfortunately, Stockton had a key turnover in that game which is what Dawg fans remember most.
Now, with a full offseason of work, Stockton faces a crucial moment in his career.
As he prepares to lead the Bulldogs into the 2025 season, the pressure is on him to prove his worth and help Georgia reclaim its place at the top of college football.
What are your thoughts on Finebaum’s doubts of Stockton and the Bulldogs???
