ATHENS — The Georgia Bulldogs are navigating a shift in their roster as Branson Robinson has become the first player to enter the transfer portal this spring, a move that has sent ripples through the program.
Robinson, who joined the Bulldogs as part of the 2022 recruiting class, has two years of eligibility left to make an impact at his next destination. He announced his decision through an Instagram post, marking a significant transition in his collegiate career.
During his freshman year, Robinson showcased flashes of potential, rushing for 330 yards on 68 carries. His standout performance came against Auburn, where he racked up 98 yards. He also found the end zone twice in a dominant 65-7 victory over TCU, making his initial season one to remember. Unfortunately, injuries plagued Robinson’s time at Georgia, starting with a ruptured patella tendon that sidelined him entirely for the 2023 season.
Returning to the lineup in 2024, Robinson faced setbacks again, suffering an MCL injury during a win against Mississippi State. He logged 25 carries for 73 yards over the first half of the season before being unable to continue. This spring, he has missed practice due to lingering knee issues, highlighting the difficult circumstances he faced in his quest to solidify a role on the team.
Looking ahead, Georgia’s running back depth includes sophomore Nate Frazier, who excelled last season, leading the team in rushing and eyeing an even bigger second season in Athens. Roderick Robinson, Branson’s teammate and fellow running back, will also be in the mix, although he too has battled injuries, having missed spring practice due to an ankle issue.
The coaching staff has received strong early reports about freshman Bo Walker, who made an impression with a team-high 44 rushing yards during G-Day. Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips Jr. round out the scholarship options in the backfield, with walk-on Cash Jones also expected to contribute.
It’s worth noting that Branson Robinson, a native of Germantown, Miss., is restricted from transferring to another school within the SEC due to conference regulations. His departure marks him as the 13th member of the 2024 squad to enter the portal, signaling a potential shift in roster dynamics for Georgia.
As the Bulldogs prepare for the upcoming season, they will undoubtedly be exploring options within the transfer portal, set to be open from April 16 through April 25, to bolster their running back corp amidst these changes.
