Boston Red Sox centerfielder Jarren Duran is preparing for the world to hear his powerful story of survival as part of the team’s upcoming Netflix docuseries, The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox. The series, which follows the team throughout their 2024 season, promises to give fans an intimate look at life on and off the field—and no moment is more personal than Duran’s heartbreaking revelation about his battle with mental health and a suicide attempt.
Duran, who emerged as one of Boston’s brightest stars in 2024, opened up in the teaser about a moment that nearly ended everything. Facing intense pressure and criticism from fans, Duran said he hit a breaking point. “I was already hearing it from fans,” he said. “And what they said to me, [it was like], ‘I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror.’ That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore.”
In an emotional and raw confession, Duran recalled the night where he attempted to take his own life. “I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and I had a bullet and I pulled the trigger and the gun clicked, but nothing happened,” he said. “So, to this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off.”
Instead of ending his life, Duran took it as a sign. “I took it as a sign of, ‘I might have to be here for a reason.’” That moment became a turning point for the young outfielder, who chose to confront his pain and live differently.
Since then, Duran has become not just a key piece of the Red Sox on the field but also a symbol of perseverance and strength. On his wrists during games, Duran writes two phrases: “[expletive] ’em” on his left wrist—his message to the demons trying to tear him down—and “Still alive” on his right, a reminder of the battle he’s still fighting.
Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy praised Duran for his bravery, saying, “Jarren’s decision to share his story is an act of courage that reaches far beyond baseball. By opening up, he’s showing others who may be struggling that they’re not alone and that asking for help isn’t just OK, it’s essential.”
As the Red Sox continue their hot start to the 2025 season, including a weekend sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, Duran has not only emerged as a fan favorite but as a voice of strength and vulnerability in the world of sports. The Clubhouse will shine a light on that journey, reminding everyone that even in baseball, the most important victories don’t always happen on the field.
The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox premieres Tuesday on Netflix.
