FS1 personality Nick Wright is known for two things: his outspoken and often times polarizing sports takes, and his loyal fandom for the Kansas City Chiefs.
His passionate and unabashed support for the Chiefs earned him some well-deserved ribbing from his colleagues on First Things First.
Following the Philadelphia Eagles’ dominant 40-22 victory over the Chiefs, Wright became the butt of the joke when his fellow panelists showered him with confetti and balloons, even bringing in a marching band to celebrate the Eagles’ triumph – a way of playfully rubbing his nose in the loss.
But it wasn’t just his panelists who took aim at Wright.
Ahead of Super Bowl LVII, Wright shared an unexpected and hilarious story about an interaction he had with none other than Jalen Hurts’ mother, Pamela Hurts, the night before the big game.
“Saturday night, night before the Super Bowl, late,” Wright began. “Having a good time, I don’t work the next day, a few drinks like most people are. And a woman walks up to me, and says ‘I need to ask you one question. Why do you talk so bad about Jalen Hurts?’
“I was like, ‘Well I don’t think I talk bad,’ and she was not budging a bit. She’s like, ‘No, no you do.'”
The exchange escalated over the next several minutes, with Wright eventually experiencing a “moment of clarity” that would change everything.
“Once this goes on for five, six, seven minutes, I had a little moment of clarity and I said, ‘Ma’am, can I ask you one question real quick? Are you Jalen Hurts’ mother?’ She said, ‘Yes, I am.'”
Wright continued the story, laughing as he described the back-and-forth that lasted another 15 minutes. While the conversation remained cordial, Wright said it was undeniably “tense.”
But perhaps the most memorable part of the exchange came at the end, when Pamela Hurts dropped the mic with a parting shot:
“She ended it with this, ‘I just want to know what you’re going to say when he wins tomorrow [on Sunday].’”
With that, Wright had no choice but to face the reality that, in just hours, Jalen Hurts would lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory and earn MVP honors.
In the aftermath, Wright was quick to apologize, offering a heartfelt tribute to Hurts’ performance.
He even went so far as to elevate Hurts to the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks, placing him alongside the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson.
It’s hard to deny that without Mrs. Hurts stepping in to defend her son that night, Wright’s change of heart might have taken longer to arrive.
But for the whole entire Hurts family, it was quite a remarkable week to say the least.
What are your thoughts on Mrs. Hurts putting Wright in his place???
