With a less than stellar receiver free agency class, it’s going to cause an increased attention on trades this 2025 NFL offseason. One of those trades could involve a tight end from the Atlanta Falcons in Kyle Pitts.
THE COMMANDERS WILL TRADE FOR PITTS
The Washington Commanders are coming off an impressive 2024 season with the first year of Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn. They still have some roster holes on their team that were glaring in their loss to the NFC Championship Game loss Philadelphia Eagles. That issue was the receiver spot.
The Atlanta Falcons Will Trade Kyle Pitts
Through two coaches in his NFL career so far, the Falcons have continued to not able to utilize Pitts’ talents correctly. Coming out of Florida, Pitts was being talked about as the next generational tight end, with 1,492 yards and 18 touchdowns over three seasons. His receiving ability was supposed to be unmatched and change the tight end position, and yet Arthur Smith used him more as a blocker and Raheem Morris has failed to get him fully involved in the offense as well.
For Pitts to have the talent he has, and only put up 602 yards and four touchdowns this season with seeing 70 targets, it’s clear he isn’t fitting in with the Falcons’ offense. For Atlanta they would get immense value back with Pitts to address more pressing needs.
Kyle Pitts Traded to the Washington Commanders
Jayden Daniels looked great in his rookie season, operating the offense like a veteran with a 69.0% completion percentage and 4,135 yards with 29 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. His dual-threat ability has also helped open the offense as Daniels rushed for 978 yards and six touchdowns over 177 attempts. Yet over the entire season their top receiver was Terry McLaurin, but when he is taken out of the equation and heavily defended like he was against a good secondary like Philadelphia, it stalled the progress. In that Eagles game, McLaurin was held to just three receptions for 51 yards.
If the Commanders want Daniels to fully develop into the quarterback he can be, and truly be a contending team, they need another superstar receiver to help outside of McLaurin. While Zach Ertz has performed well, he is a free agent and is 34. While he hasn’t shown signs of slowing down yet, he is still bound to regress at some point and not be as productive, meaning Washington will need to add to the position either way.
Even if the Commanders end up retaining Ertz, having Pitts who can play out wide as well will help overall add another element to their receiving game and give Daniels a receiving option with plenty of upside.
