Devon Park in Oklahoma City opens its gates for Big 12 conference championship softball tomorrow — and the most dominant pitcher in college softball is arriving at peak form.
Texas Tech enters the 2026 Big 12 Softball Tournament presented by Allstate as the No. 1 seed at 50-5 overall and 21-3 in conference play. The Red Raiders are ranked No. 3 in the country in the final NFCA poll. And NiJaree Canady, their senior ace, is carrying the momentum of the most technically perfect performance of her already legendary career: a perfect game against Baylor on May 2, Senior Day at Rocky Johnson Field.
A Perfect Game, Then a Tournament
On Senior Day four days ago, Canady retired all 21 Baylor batters she faced. The final score was 8-0. It was the first perfect game of Canady’s career and the sixth in Texas Tech program history. Coming into it, she already had multiple no-hitters, more than 1,000 career strikeouts, and a case as the best college softball pitcher of her generation.
The perfect game didn’t just cap the regular season — it set a tone. Canady is at her highest level of execution heading into a tournament where Texas Tech has everything to gain. A Big 12 title would give the Red Raiders a legitimate shot at a top-4 national seed, potentially hosting a Regional at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock.
Tomorrow’s opening matchup sends Texas Tech against No. 8 Baylor at 1:30 PM CT. It will be the fourth time these programs have faced each other in seven days. Baylor knows Canady’s arsenal as well as any team in the country. They’ll also know, deeply, how that knowledge failed to help them four days ago when she was unhittable.
The Rest of the Thursday Bracket
The Big 12 Tournament at Devon Park — the home of the Women’s College World Series — runs May 7-9. After Texas Tech and Baylor open, No. 2 Oklahoma State faces No. 7 Utah at 5 PM CT. Oklahoma State carries genuine national seed aspirations of its own and has been one of the conference’s most consistent programs all year.
No. 3 Arizona vs. No. 6 Arizona State follows at 7:30 PM CT. The Pac-12 schools add an intriguing element to a tournament dominated by Big 12 programs. Arizona, with its storied softball history, is always capable of a deep run.
Devon Park gives Texas Tech something close to a home-field advantage — the venue where the WCWS is played every spring feels familiar to a program that has competed at the national level recently. For the Red Raiders, playing at the WCWS venue in May, before the WCWS, with a tournament title on the line, is exactly the kind of environment Canady and her teammates are built for.
What’s Next
The Big 12 Tournament concludes Saturday, May 9. The champion earns the Big 12’s automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. The Selection Show is Sunday, May 10, at 7 PM ET on ESPN2, when national seeds and the full 32-team bracket will be announced.
Texas Tech is No. 3 in the country. NiJaree Canady threw a perfect game four days ago. Devon Park awaits. The stage is set for one of the most compelling conference tournament runs of the 2026 season. It starts tomorrow.
