The ACC Softball Championship is officially open at Palmer Park in Charlottesville, Virginia — and Florida State, the No. 1 seed, is doing what top seeds do: watching, waiting, and preparing for Thursday.
FSU finished the regular season 43-8 overall and 18-3 in ACC play. They are ranked No. 8 nationally in the final NFCA poll. Their RPI sits in the top 15 of all Division I programs. A deep tournament run — ideally a championship — would give the Seminoles their most compelling argument yet for a national seed that would bring Regionals to JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee.
Wednesday’s First-Round Games
While FSU rests, four first-round matchups play out in Charlottesville today:
The championship opens at 11 AM ET with Notre Dame facing Georgia Tech on the ACC Network. Notre Dame — the No. 8 seed — has been one of the more interesting programs in the ACC this season. Georgia Tech brings athleticism and pitching depth. This game is a genuine toss-up.
Louisville and NC State follow at 1:30 PM ET. The Cardinals are the No. 5 seed and could potentially be FSU’s path in the semifinals, but they’ll need to navigate this bracket game first. NC State enters as the No. 12 seed but has upset capability.
Clemson vs. UNC tips at 5 PM ET. The Tigers have been competitive in ACC play all season, and North Carolina has the offensive firepower to stay in any game. The 7:30 PM ET nightcap pairs Virginia against Pitt — Virginia (No. 6 seed) enters as the moderate favorite.
What the ACC Title Would Mean for FSU
Duke earned the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament, giving the Seminoles a potential bracket rival with genuine national credentials. If FSU and Duke meet in the championship game, the winner would have a strong case for a top-8 national seed.
For FSU, the narrative is straightforward: win the ACC. The Seminoles already have the wins — 43 of them — and the elite pitching rotation that won them 18 conference games. Their offense, anchored by Isa Torres, has been among the most dangerous in the country all season. What they need now is the tournament performance that converts good numbers into a national seed on Selection Sunday.
FSU pitching in Charlottesville’s late-spring conditions will be the story to watch. Lonni Alameda’s staff has been consistent and sharp. The tournament field here doesn’t include any of the SEC’s elite programs, which means the path to the ACC title is the most manageable it could be.
What’s Next
FSU enters Thursday’s quarterfinals having rested through the first round. The Seminoles will face one of today’s winners — probably Notre Dame, Louisville, or Clemson, depending on how the bracket plays out. The ACC Tournament runs through Saturday, May 9, with all games on ACC Network.
The Selection Show is Sunday, May 10, at 7 PM ET on ESPN2. Today is the beginning of the week that will define FSU’s postseason positioning. The Seminoles came to Charlottesville to win. The bracket is forming around them.
