Yankees Sign Former Homegrown Cardinals Hurler To Bolster Pitching Staff Depth

The St. Louis Cardinals are making substantial moves this offseason, focusing intently on bolstering their pitching staff after a disappointing 2023 season.

Among the noteworthy developments is the triumphant return of Lance Lynn to the Cardinals’ rotation. The organization has also expressed strong interest in reuniting with Jordan Hicks and Jordan Montgomery, though these endeavors face considerable challenges.

However, one of the most significant headlines revolves around a former Cardinals pitcher who has now inked a contract with an American League team. Luke Weaver, a promising prospect, has reportedly signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the New York Yankees. What makes this deal even more intriguing is the inclusion of a club option for 2025, with the potential to reach a maximum value of $8.25 million.

Weaver’s career boasts impressive statistics, including a career record of 15 wins and 17 losses, a 4.79 ERA, a remarkable 238-to-83 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .281 batting average against, and a 1.45 WHIP accumulated over 233 innings pitched during his time with the Cardinals.

Notably, back in 2018, the Cardinals engaged in a trade that sent Luke Weaver, along with Carson Kelly, Andy Young, and future considerations, to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for the four-time Gold Glove recipient, Paul Goldschmidt. This transaction marked a pivotal moment in the Cardinals’ roster transformation.

Looking at Weaver’s recent performance in the 2023 season, he posted a 6.40 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP across 123 2/3 innings pitched, spanning his time with the Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners, and eventually the New York Yankees. His journey to the Big Apple began when the Mariners designated him for assignment, and he was subsequently claimed off waivers.

For the Cardinals, who are content with their current rotation, signing Weaver, despite his potential, didn’t seem to hold much appeal. Instead, the team’s primary focus is now on improving the bullpen, with a strong emphasis on adding high-leverage relievers before the highly anticipated Opening Day.
