Yankees Release Experienced Utility Player After Brief Stay With Team

The New York Yankees have been making significant moves this offseason, showcasing their determination to compete in the 2024 MLB season. One of their major acquisitions was superstar slugger Juan Soto, acquired through a trade with the San Diego Padres, marking one of the biggest trades of the offseason.

In addition to the high-profile Soto trade, the Yankees have been actively strengthening their organizational depth. Their latest move involved claiming left-handed pitcher Matt Gage off waivers from the Houston Astros. To accommodate Gage on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated utility man Diego Castillo for assignment.

Castillo’s journey in professional baseball began when he signed with the Yankees as an international free agent back in 2014. He steadily progressed through the Yankees’ minor league system but was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021 as part of a deal centered around Clay Holmes. Subsequently, Castillo made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2022 and was later traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks before the 2023 season.

During his time with the Triple-A Reno Aces, the 26-year-old Castillo exhibited his skills, boasting an impressive slash line of .313/.431/.410, including 33 doubles and 72 RBIs. Following the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Diamondbacks designated Castillo for assignment, leading to his claim off waivers by the New York Mets. However, Castillo’s journey continues as he once again finds himself designated for assignment, this time by the Yankees, as he seeks a new destination in the world of Major League Baseball.
