The Ohio State Buckeyes celebrated their first college football national championship in a decade, capping off a storybook postseason run.
The Buckeyes overcame significant adversity, including a crushing end to their regular season which brought many doubters out of the closet.
Ohio State fell to its archrival, the Michigan Wolverines, for the fourth consecutive year, leaving some fans worried that Ryan Day’s team could end up being one-and-done in the playoffs.
To their credit, the Buckeyes shut up all the doubters and marched on a dominant playoff run, taking down Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame en route to their well-deserved national title.
Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, who led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2014, praised his alma mater’s resilience but expressed frustration over the heavy criticism directed at his successor, Ryan Day.
“I coached a long time and a lot has been made of it and Coach Day and the pressures of coaching at a place like Ohio State,” Meyer said on The Triple Option Podcast.
“I made the comment that that’s not gonna change. The thing that has got to change and has changed is the idiots on social media that don’t sign their name to stuff.”
Meyer referred to fans using anonymous “burner” accounts to share harsh and often unfounded criticisms of Day and his coaching decisions.
Despite the noise, Day has solidified his place in Buckeye history with a national title now added to his coaching résumé.
The victory also sets the stage for Ohio State’s next major hurdle: ending its losing streak against Michigan.
The Buckeyes will have their next opportunity to face the Wolverines on November 29, 2025, when they travel to Ann Arbor.
In fairness to Meyer, he has been 99.99% supportive of Ohio State fans and routinely praises their passion for the program.
However, the one complaint he has is directed at those pesky anonymous trolls on social media.
Looking ahead, Ohio State’s quest for a repeat will face challenges, as some of the team’s key contributors – such as defensive end Jack Sawyer, quarterback Will Howard, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, and running back TreVeyon Henderson – are set to depart.
Having said that, we all know talent will never be a problem in Columbus. And now that Day has finally gotten over the hump, perhaps that will make the Buckeyes even more dangerous going forward.
It’s never too early to look ahead to next season. How’s this for a season opener: Ohio State vs. Texas at The Horseshoe??? Wow.
Getting back to our old buddy Urban Meyer … What are your thoughts on his comments???
