McDaniel isn’t alone in navigating this transition. His teammate Joey Aguilar, who joined UCLA from Appalachian State just this spring, has decided to transfer to Tennessee. Aguilar’s move is particularly noteworthy, as it mirrors the change in roster dynamics created by the entrance of Nico Iamaleava, who is making the switch from Tennessee to UCLA, creating an interesting quarterback exchange between the schools.
Originally a three-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting cycle, McDaniel was ranked No. 482 overall and stood as the No. 31 quarterback according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which aggregates ratings from various recruiting media. His recruitment was competitive, with offers from schools like Arizona, Florida, San Jose State, and Indiana. At one point, he was committed to Arizona but ultimately flipped to UCLA last December, just days after Madden Iamaleava de-committed from UCLA before committing to Arkansas.
Reflecting on his time at UCLA, McDaniel expressed a sense of accomplishment in being able to attend the school he had long aspired to join. “It feels really amazing that the school that I had a goal of going to is attained,” he noted. “This was definitely not an easy decision, but with the help of my family and friends, I feel very confident in it.”
As McDaniel prepares for this next chapter, he will be looking for a new destination to continue his college career. His prior commitment to Arizona raises questions about whether they would still welcome him, particularly considering his prestigious status as an Elite 11 finalist and his impressive leadership leading his high school team to their best season in two decades as a senior in 2024.
