Toronto Blue Jays Secure Yariel Rodriguez: Cuban Pitcher Inks Deal After 2023 NPB Hiatus

In a significant move, the Toronto Blue Jays have secured the services of one of the premier Cuban pitchers on the global stage. The Blue Jays have reached an agreement with free agent right-hander Yariel Rodriguez, pending completion of a physical examination and resolution of immigration matters. The deal, first reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, awaits official confirmation from the team.

Rodriguez, who will turn 27 in March, has established himself as a formidable setup man in Japan over the past few seasons, boasting an impressive 2.29 ERA with 161 strikeouts in 149 1/3 innings for the Chunichi Dragons from 2021 to 2022. Despite not seeing action in 2023 due to contractual constraints with Chunichi, the right-hander’s reputation remained intact. He spent the season at home after the Dragons released him in October.

While Rodriguez has primarily thrived as a reliever, there is speculation about his potential as a starter. The Blue Jays may explore this avenue, especially considering the uncertain performance of Alek Manoah following a challenging 2023 season. Rodriguez, who served as Cuba’s top starter in the World Baseball Classic, showcased his prowess by allowing only two runs in 7 1/3 innings across two starts, recording an impressive 10 strikeouts. Notably, he displayed his skills against notable big leaguers, including Xander Bogaerts.

Baseball America, earlier this offseason, praised Rodriguez’s repertoire, stating that his “four-seam fastball is now a plus pitch that sits 94-96 mph and touches 100 with natural cut.” Additionally, they highlighted his “above-average, 83-86 mph slider with vertical bite and solid depth” as his primary secondary pitch. Despite these strengths, concerns were raised about his two-pitch mix, inconsistent control, and emotional demeanor, leading some to believe his skill set may be better suited for a relief role.

Rodriguez is part of a wave of international talent making their way to MLB this offseason. Among the notable signings, the Los Angeles Dodgers secured Japanese righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a remarkable 12-year contract, while the San Francisco Giants inked a six-year deal with Korean center fielder Jung-Hoo Lee. Japanese lefty Shota Imanaga joined the Chicago Cubs, rounding out an exciting period of cross-cultural player movements in the league.
