The New York Giants are making some exciting roster moves as rookie minicamp kicks off, and one of the most talked-about decisions involves first-round draft pick Abdul Carter. Carter had his sights set on wearing the legendary Lawrence Taylor’s retired number 56, a nod to one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history. However, those aspirations were dashed when the team opted not to grant him the number. Undeterred, he then aimed for another iconic jersey: Phil Simms’ retired number 11. Unfortunately for Carter, that idea also fell through.

So, what’s the new plan? The young linebacker has settled into a fresh start with the No. 51 jersey, a choice that pays homage to his jersey’s lineage while still evoking that historical gravitas we associate with Giants greats. As the team officially announced today, this is the number Carter will don as he embarks on his professional career, with plans to keep it beyond minicamp.

In addition to Carter’s jersey announcement, the Giants confirmed that rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart will wear No. 6. For Dart, this marks a change from his college days when he sported No. 2 at both USC and Ole Miss. That number is already claimed by cornerback Deonte Banks, who switched from No. 3—prompted by Russell Wilson’s request to wear the number he’s famously worn throughout his NFL tenure.

But that’s not all—the Giants have also confirmed other rookies’ jersey choices: Darius Alexander will wear No. 91, Cam Skatebo will take No. 44, Marcus Mbow will go with No. 71, Thomas Fidone will wear No. 86, and Korie Black has settled on No. 25.

This infusion of new talent in fresh jerseys is always a thrilling time for fans as they eagerly anticipate the contributions these players will bring to the field. With minicamp now underway, the Giants are laying the groundwork for an intriguing season ahead, and it’s clear that each rookie is looking to make their mark right from the start.
